Magdalena Drwiega

Statement

Being a painter means having an intimate relationship with how paints work and how elements of the painting come together to build up a language of communication. My main interest lies in exploring the problem and application of illusion and visual perception - how the artist can confuse the viewer, create alternative versions of reality. Based on contradictions, my work brings together ideas of representing and expressing simplistic forms which depict not objective but rather subjective emotions. My work has real concern with the process, the process which has to do with achieving a certain balance between an image that is explicitly simple and clear yet is inherently complex. My motifs are generated through the endless procedure of drawings and sculpture based on previous one, there is always the organic process between them. I explore the form and space through experimentation and intuition, giving the figure sculptural power. The physical qualities of the medium very much dictate the look of my work. I focus on gesture and that gesture is aimed at creating an illusion of movement, time and space where the colour and forms fly and are hung in an illusory space.
